She always had an affinity for them and it was her pets, in part, that got her through the rough spots in her life. Her mother left the family when she was seven, only to return with a new baby in tow when she was 10. Her parents tried to make it work, but it didn’t and they divorced when she was 12. She doesn’t talk about those two years a lot. Her mother left again, taking her half-brother with her, and Jo stayed with her dad. After the divorce, she spent a lot of time at the neighbor’s, or her aunt’s, or a number of other places where they watched out for her while her dad worked. She wasn’t ever very scholarly, but she had some patient teachers who didn’t mind letting her take her time (and theirs) until she got stuff straight in her head. She was a member of 4-H and did well there, getting awards and ribbons. Sadly, the boys teased her because she was, well, “large-boned” and the girls thought she was weird because she like bugs and snakes and creepy-crawling things as well as cats and dogs and horses. She entered veterinary school after graduation but the professors there weren’t as understanding as her previous teachers had been and she struggled and, despite her natural ability with animals, failed out. She doesn’t like to talk about that, either. Luckily, her aunt knew someone who knew someone who worked at a small petting zoo in a nearby town and Jo was given a job and training there. After a few years, she was hired at the larger, “full service” zoo and finally, she applied for and was given a position at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. She’s just starting there and can’t wait to meet all the new animals. Past Background Occupation: Gamekeeper, Keeper of the Keys and the Grounds, Care of Magical Creatures teacher Education: Kicked out of formal schooling at Hogwart’s Activities: Taking care of the school grounds, patrolling the forest, trying to hide creatures he shouldn’t have. Like, oh, dragons. Home: A hut on the grounds of the school Finance: He depends on Hogwarts. History: The son of a wizard and a giantess, Hagrid tends to stick out and has been subjected to much prejudice. His childhood was difficult, as his mother Fridwulfa, a giantess, left the family when he was three, and his father died during Hagrid’s second year at Hogwarts. While at school he was known to be something of a troublemaker – among other things, raising an acromantula in the school. This set him up to be framed by Tom Riddle for opening the Chamber of Secrets, and at the end of his third year he was expelled and his wand broken in two. Albus Dumbledore, arranged for him to stay on as gamekeeper, and took care of him. As a result Hagrid is fiercely loyal to Dumbledore. Hagrid’s fascination with such creatures has gotten him in trouble at times as a teacher, such as a lesson on hippogriffs that led to Draco Malfoy getting slashed and a lesson on thestrals, which Umbridge notes are classified as “dangerous”. In such cases Hagrid tends to lose his confidence and his nerve, and his classes turn boring for long periods of time. From the moment he was sent to retrieve Harry for his first year at Hogwarts, Hagrid and Harry Potter became friends, and have remained so ever since. Harry, Ron, and Hermione visited Hagrid’s hut regularly while in school and Hagrid has served several times as a bodyguard for Harry. When Harry was on the run from the Ministry of Magic, Hagrid also threw a ‘Support Harry Potter’ party in his house, and was nearly arrested. Hagrid and his half-brother fought in the Battle of Hogwarts. During the first part of the fighting, Hagrid was captured by Voldemort's giants and tied up in the forest. After Harry was "killed," Hagrid was forced to carry his friend back to Hogwarts as a symbol of Voldemort's complete victory.
